Jeep Renegade Car Innovation Design

The Jeep Renegade (BU) is a subcompact crossover SUV (mini SUV in Europe) from the Jeep division of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It is built in Melfi, Italy alongside the related Fiat 500X, with which it shares its platform which is based on Small US Wide 4×4 architecture. It was first shown to the public in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show and mass-production started in late August of that year.

The Renegade is the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America and will sell in South African, European, North American, and Brazilian markets. Standard Renegade models come with front-wheel-drive, with four-wheel drive available on Sport, Latitude, and Limited trims.

TrailHawk models are "Trail Rated" and feature Jeep's Active Drive Low four-wheel drive system and a 20 mm (0.79 in) lift kit. It also features 17 in (430 mm) aluminum wheels, skid plates, and unique front and rear fascias compared to standard Renegade models. Like the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, the Renegade Trailhawk will feature red front and rear tow hooks, a red 'Trail Rated 4X4' badge on both front upper fenders, a black vinyl decal in the center of the hood, and alloy wheels with black-painted accents. The Trailhawk model emphasizes the Renegade's off-road capabilities, and is meant for the avid off-roader.

The Jeep Selec-terrain traction control feature lets you choose any of the following modes in the 4X4 TrailHawk version: Auto, Snow, Sand, Mud or Rock. The Renegade offers either cloth or leather seating surfaces. It offers seating for five passengers, with a 40/20/40 split-folding rear bench seat, and a fold-flat front passenger's seat for more cargo capacity.

The Renegade is something of a different kettle of fish for the compact crossover segment – which still doesn't have what you’d call a proper, old-school 4x4 within it: a car with plenty of grunt, a low-range transfer box and ground clearances to put a Land Cruiser to shame.

Most manufacturers would say that’s because compact crossover buyers simply aren’t asking for one, and certainly aren’t willing to pay a premium for one. But to a car-maker like Jeep, given how fast this part of the market is growing, that’s an irresistible invitation to launch one – whether the market wants it or not.

The Renegade is a 4.2-metre miniature SUV that’s been designed and developed in the USA, is based on a heavily adapted Fiat supermini platform, and is being built in Italy alongside the forthcoming Fiat 500X.

Consequently, in order to net as many potential buyers as possible, the Renegade is powered by a choice of six petrol and Multijet diesel engines. Given that those off-road abilities touch and compromise not just this Renegade but every derivative in the range to a greater or lesser extent, we’d be surprised if the car became an overnight sensation.

Still, choice is always a welcome addition to any part of the market – and this particular agent of it has no small amount of charm, which isn’t a bad place for any new car to start.
